FAQ's Direct Cremation
What is a direct cremation?
A direct cremation is a simple, dignified, and cost-effective cremation service without a traditional funeral ceremony. There is no formal service, viewing, or attendees at the cremation itself. Instead, the deceased is cremated, and the ashes are returned to the family, allowing them to hold a private memorial or celebration of life at a time and place of their choosing.
Why might someone choose a direct cremation?
People choose direct cremation for various reasons, including:
Affordability – Lower costs compared to traditional funerals.
Simplicity – No formal service, hearse, or procession.
Flexibility – Families can arrange a personal memorial in their own way, including perhaps arranging a 'Celebration of Life' get together at a time to suit all.
Privacy – Ideal for those who prefer a less formal farewell.
What areas do you serve?
We cover the whole of Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside. If you live beyond, please give us a call to discuss.
How do I arrange a direct cremation?
Arranging a direct cremation is simple. Contact us by phone or email, and our caring team will guide you through the process. We handle everything, from completing paperwork to making the cremation arrangements, allowing you to focus on what truly matters.
Can you take over from another funeral director?
Yes. They may have a small charge for the collection, just as we would have charged if we had done the urgent collection. We will deal with the funeral director on your behalf and work towards keeping this cost to a minimum.
When do I pay and what payment methods do you accept?
As our services are immediate, you are required to pay the full balance at point of call. We will email you over our contract, and invoice - stating paid in full.
Payment methods:
-
Bank transfer – quick, secure and free. Ask a member of our team for our Bank Details.
-
Pay online with Card payment – we accept all major credit cards and of course you can pay by debit card.
-
Pay securely over the phone. Our team mates will walk you though this, step by step.
Is there any paperwork I need to organise?
Yes. You will need to register the death with the registrar in the area in which the death occurred. This will generate a key document that we must receive in order to proceed with the cremation. If the Coroner is involved you will be told when to register the death and the Coroner will send us an alternative document for the cremation to proceed.
Can I visit my loved one before the cremation?
Regrettably not. For a loved one to be viewed at a later date there is a need for the them to be embalmed- but with a Direct Cremation this expensive process is excluded. We would however be happy to come and collect your loved one after a prescribed/delayed period of time to enable you to have longer with them or to allow distant relatives time to attend. There are however, some practical adjustments that will need to be made should you wish to delay bringing into care; lay your loved one flat, with arms and legs straight. Try to keep the room as cool as possible- perhaps open a window and turn off any heated beds or blankets.
Can I send items in to be placed in the coffin?
Yes. Families may send items for the coffin, provided we are informed in advance. Some materials, such as glass, batteries, or other cremated remains, cannot be included. Our team can guide you on what is permitted.
How do I know that the ashes are correct?
Every cremation is individual. There are no bulk or multiple cremations that take place, this is a myth in this country. From the moment your loved one is collected, they are identified with 3 pieces of unique information and this remains on them and on the coffin throughout, right through to the ashes being placed into the urn with the corresponding markers and cremation certificate. So you can rest assured that the ashes are correct.
